Halloween and Mischief Night

Prior to our life on Kwaj, I was well acquainted with the annual event that was nearly as anticipated by children as Christmas: of course, I speak of Halloween. :smile: In those days, even young children were set loose in our neighborhood to go door-to-door with friends in search of sweet goodies to fill our sacks/pails/whatever. We also enjoyed coming up with costumes to wear, although I think I usually went as an Army officer, wearing a dress coat adorned with military insignia borrowed from Dad’s time in the service, plus one of his officer dress hats. I made an effort to get it right, too, by learning where the various insignia went on the coat rather than just pinning stuff on haphazardly. (more…)

Emon Beach

People who are unfamiliar with Kwaj would probably think that we spent 3 years on a beach paradise in the South Pacific. Actually, the island had very little beach real estate, being mostly surrounded by a coral reef. For example, the “beach” area behind our house on the ocean side of the island consisted of a small strip of sand, barely enough to walk along, and nowhere to swim because of the reef. (more…)
