Galactic Encounter

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007 by Rex Simmons

As mentioned previously, I was always a bit of an airplane nut, and the airport was a favorite haunt when there wasn’t something better going on. Having never lived near an airport before, the accessibility of the Kwaj airport was a real novelty, and cheap entertainment. Countless hours were spent loitering around the air terminal or cruising on my bike along Ocean or Lagoon Road near the edge of the runway, looking for new photo opportunities or just watching the planes and helicopters come and go. One specific incident worth retelling involved an encounter with that behemoth of the air, the C-5 Galaxy. (more…)

A Little Slice of Kwaj

Monday, January 1st, 2007 by Rex Simmons

If you’re like me and periodically (or even constantly) looking for a quick fix for your Kwaj cravings, don’t forget that you have a great resource available to you online. When people move away from a place where they’ve lived for some time, they sometimes choose to have newspapers from their former home sent to them at their new residence, just to keep in touch with what’s happening and to help quell any feelings of homesickness. Nowadays most people can stay in touch with their old hometown publications online, and that’s also true of The Hourglass. In case you didn’t know or had forgotten, current and archived issues of the Kwaj Hourglass newspaper are available online. You’ll find the link here on my blog site and on numerous other Kwaj-related websites. I’ve not written any recollections about The Hourglass in my blog posts, primarily because I never spent much time reading it (with the exception of checking the movie schedule  ). I still don’t refer to it often, but find it somewhat soothing to scan it now and then, generating a momentary feeling as though I’m back there among the other islanders.

This evening I was scanning the December 16 issue and read a couple of reader responses regarding previous articles about underage drinking. Seems that some things truly never change.
